Your Butt Has a Sex Life After 40: Why It's Never Too Late to Explore Anal Pleasure
Share
When we talk about sex after 40, the conversation usually revolves around hormones, libido, menopause, erectile changes, and keeping the spark alive.
But there's one part of the body that rarely gets invited into the conversation: your butt.
For some reason, anal pleasure is still treated like an extreme sexual activity, something reserved for the adventurous or something you either love or refuse to consider.
But what if we've been looking at it all wrong?
Anal pleasure doesn't have to mean penetration. It doesn't have to involve a penis, and it certainly doesn't have to be uncomfortable.
And perhaps most importantly, there's no age limit on discovering something new about your body.

Anal Pleasure Is More Common Than You Think
Despite the stigma, anal sex isn't nearly as uncommon as people might believe.
U.S. research has reported that approximately 36% of women and 44% of men between 25 and 44 have experienced heterosexual anal intercourse at some point in their lives.
But those numbers only tell part of the story.
Historically, many studies have focused on penetrative anal intercourse, overlooking other forms of anal stimulation that people may find pleasurable.
That includes external touching, massage, vibration, shallow penetration, butt plugs, and prostate stimulation.
When we expand our definition of anal pleasure, we open the conversation to an entirely different range of experiences.
What Research Says About Women's Anal Pleasure
A fascinating 2022 study involving 3,017 American women between the ages of 18 and 93 examined the specific ways women experience pleasure through anal stimulation.
Researchers identified three categories:
1. Anal Surfacing
Touching or stimulating the outside of the anus without penetration.
Approximately 40% of women reported finding this pleasurable.
2. Anal Shallowing
Stimulation just inside the anal opening, without deep penetration.
Around 35% of women reported enjoying this type of touch.
3. Anal Pairing
Combining anal stimulation with another pleasurable activity, such as clitoral or vaginal stimulation.
Approximately 40% of women reported pleasure from this combination.
These findings challenge the assumption that anal pleasure must involve deep penetration.
For many people, external stimulation or gentle pressure may be exactly what they enjoy.
And there's no reason to take things further unless you genuinely want to.
Perhaps one of the most interesting findings was that some women discovered pleasurable anal touch much later in life, including women who first experienced it in their 70s.
That's a pretty good reminder that sexual discovery doesn't have an expiration date.
Why Your 40s Might Be the Perfect Time to Experiment
As we get older, our relationship with sex often changes.
We may become more comfortable communicating what we want, more willing to explore, and less concerned about what other people think.
At the same time, our bodies are changing.
Hormonal shifts, changes in arousal, and differences in sexual response can mean that what worked at 25 doesn't necessarily feel the same at 45 or 55.
But that doesn't mean pleasure has to disappear.
It might simply mean expanding our definition of what sex can look like.
Instead of focusing on recreating the sex we had in our younger years, we can start asking a better question:
What feels good to my body now?
For some people, that might include exploring anal stimulation. For others, it won't.
Both are perfectly valid.
Let's Talk About Men's Pleasure and the Prostate
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding anal pleasure is that a man enjoying anal stimulation somehow determines his sexual orientation.
It doesn't.
Sexual orientation is about who you're attracted to, not which parts of your body you enjoy having stimulated.
For people with a prostate, anal stimulation can provide access to sensations that may contribute to sexual arousal and orgasm.
And there are several ways to explore those sensations.
External pressure, gentle massage, prostate massagers, and other forms of anal stimulation can all offer different experiences.
Unfortunately, stigma can discourage some men from even considering these possibilities.
But pleasure doesn't need a label.
Enjoying prostate stimulation doesn't change someone's sexuality. It simply means they've discovered another sensation their body enjoys.
Anal Toys: There's More Than One Way to Explore
One common misconception is that anal toys follow some kind of progression, starting small and eventually working toward larger penetration.
That's not how pleasure works.
Bigger isn't automatically better, and there is no finish line.
Different toys offer different sensations.
Small Butt Plugs: Designed to provide gentle pressure or a feeling of fullness. They can be used during masturbation or other sexual activities.
Vibrating Butt Plugs: Combine gentle fullness with vibration and can be paired with other forms of stimulation.
Anal Beads: Offer a different sensation through their shape and gradual changes in pressure.
Prostate Massagers: Specifically shaped to stimulate the prostate through pressure, movement, or vibration.
Dual-Stimulation Toys: Allow anal stimulation to be combined with clitoral, vaginal, or penile stimulation.
Remote-Controlled Toys: Introduce a playful, interactive element for couples who enjoy exploring together.
The most important consideration is choosing something designed specifically for anal use.
Any toy inserted anally needs a properly flared base or another reliable design feature that prevents it from becoming fully lodged inside the rectum.
Household objects and toys without appropriate safety features should never be used for anal penetration.
How to Explore Anal Pleasure Safely
Curiosity is great, but comfort, communication, and safety should always come first.
Talk About It First
Have a conversation with your partner outside the bedroom. Discuss what you're curious about, what you're comfortable with, and what is completely off-limits.
Start With External Touch
There's no need to begin with penetration. Gentle pressure, massage, or vibration around the outside may be pleasurable on its own.
Use Plenty of Lubricant
Unlike the vagina, the anus doesn't produce its own lubrication. Using a generous amount of compatible lubricant helps reduce friction and discomfort.
Water-based lubricants are versatile, while silicone-based options may offer longer-lasting lubrication. Always check compatibility with your toys and barriers.
Go Slowly and Listen to Your Body
If you decide to explore penetration, start gently and allow time to adjust.
Pain is a signal to stop, not something to push through. Avoid numbing products that could hide discomfort or injury.
Practice Good Hygiene
Wash toys according to their manufacturer's instructions, and never move a toy, finger, or penis directly from anal contact to vaginal contact without washing it or changing the condom.
Remember STI Protection
Anal sexual contact can transmit sexually transmitted infections. Condoms and appropriate barriers can help reduce risk, including during oral-anal contact.
And remember, consent can be withdrawn at any point. Nobody owes their partner anal play, no matter how curious the other person may be.
The Bottom Line: Your Pleasure Doesn't Retire at 40
Getting older doesn't mean we have to stop experimenting, discovering, or enjoying our bodies.
Whether you're curious about a little external touch, interested in prostate stimulation, considering a new toy, or completely uninterested in anal play, the choice is yours.
Sexual wellness isn't about checking activities off a list.
It's about understanding your body, communicating your preferences, and giving yourself permission to enjoy what genuinely feels good.
And if there's one thing we can take away from women discovering new forms of pleasure well into their 70s and beyond, it's this:
You're never too old to learn something new about your body.
